Well-informed mental health awareness workshops at Taylor High School
Taylor High School’s first mental health week took place from Monday 27th February to Friday 2nd March. Taylor High School’s PE teacher Patricia Rooney organised a range of well-being activities for 1st – 6th year pupils throughout the week. Through working in partnership with Clare Cairney from Healthy Happy Humans, the Well-informed information service was fortunate enough to become involved in the school’s mental health week.
Both SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) services; Well-informed and ClubNet delivered mental health and well-being awareness sessions to a range of classes on Wednesday and Thursday during each school period. Each session consisted of between 20 – 50 pupils. The workshops involved an introduction to *Well-informed and ClubNet; a mental health awareness presentation, tailored to the year groups, on mental health issues and ways people can make themselves feel better; a mental health quiz, tailored to the year groups, looking at myths and misconceptions; and an opportunity for the pupils to browse the Well-informed information stall as well as trying their hand at the celebrity game, matching the celebrity up to the mental health issue. The aim was to raise awareness of Well-informed and ClubNet as well as conveying the important message that mental health affects everyone.
The awareness sessions were well received by all pupils as they provided respect and interest throughout the presentation. Some sessions showed the pupils to be very engaging by answering questions throughout the presentation at appropriate times as well as asking their own mental health related questions in response to the quiz. OverallTaylorhigh school pupils showed a keen interest throughout the sessions and both Well-informed and ClubNet welcome the opportunity to become involved in the schools next mental health week.
